How to Organize Your ChatGPT Chats
If you use ChatGPT every day, your sidebar fills up fast. Here is how to sort hundreds of chatgpt.com chats into clean Projects, by hand or automatically in one click.
The fastest way to organize ChatGPT chats is the free Chat Organizer Chrome extension. Pick ChatGPT in the popup, click Organize, review the plan, click Apply, and every unorganized chat moves into the right Project automatically. No API key, no account, nothing is deleted.
Why ChatGPT chats get messy
ChatGPT keeps every conversation in one long list, newest first. After a few weeks of coding questions, research, drafts, recipes, and travel planning, that list becomes impossible to scan. ChatGPT Projects exist to group related chats, but moving them in by hand, one at a time, is the kind of chore nobody actually does.
So the chats pile up, and finding that one useful conversation from last month means endless scrolling. Organizing them is worth it: Projects keep context together and make ChatGPT far easier to come back to.
The fast way: organize every chat in one click
Chat Organizer reads your unorganized chats, works out what each one is about, and moves them all into Projects for you. You approve a preview before anything happens, so you are always in control.
- Install the extensionAdd Chat Organizer to Chrome. It is free, with no API key and no account to set up.
- Pick ChatGPT and click OrganizeOpen chatgpt.com, click the extension, choose ChatGPT in the switcher (it auto-detects the tab you are on), then click Organize. It scans every unorganized chat and builds a move plan using a multilingual keyword wordlist and AI for the ambiguous ones.
- Review the planA grouped preview shows exactly which chat goes where. New Projects are marked, and chats it could not confidently categorize are flagged separately so nothing moves by surprise.
- Click ApplyEvery chat moves into its Project in one batch. Done in seconds, and nothing is ever deleted.
How to organize ChatGPT chats manually
If you only have a few chats, you can organize them inside ChatGPT without any extension:
- Create a Project from the ChatGPT sidebar (for example "Work", "Code", or "Research").
- Open a chat, use its menu, and move it into the Project.
- Repeat for each conversation you want to file.
This is fine for a handful of chats. Once you have dozens or hundreds, doing it by hand is exactly the slow, repetitive task the extension was built to remove.
Tips for keeping ChatGPT organized
- Use descriptive Project names. Names like "Coding" or "Finance" match far more chats than vague ones like "Stuff". The matching engine derives keywords straight from your Project names.
- Set up your Projects first. The extension maps chats onto your existing Projects. Start with the categories you care about and it will use them.
- Run it regularly. It only processes chats not already in a Project, so repeat runs are fast.
- Use Manual Mode for the leftovers. Anything that could not be auto-categorized can be assigned by hand in a couple of clicks.
Is it safe?
Yes. Nothing is ever deleted, only moved. On ChatGPT the extension never deletes a Project either, because deleting a ChatGPT Project would delete the chats inside it. Your chats are read through your own active ChatGPT session and never stored on a server. For ambiguous titles, only the short chat title (never the conversation content) is sent to a shared AI service to pick a category. The extension ships no analytics and no tracking. You can read the full privacy policy.
Use Claude too? See how to organize your Claude chats. The same extension does both, you just pick the platform in the popup.
